Barbara Blaine Memorial Fund Means New
Life For Homeless Cats
The
Barbara Blaine Memorial Fund, formed to honor our friend
and colleague, Barbara Blaine, who passed away in 1997,
is providing a new lease on life for abandoned and stray
cats. Dr. Blaine was our Director of Companion Animal issues,
a veterinarian for the Michigan Humane Society, and a tireless
worker for the welfare of all companion animals. She had
a particular soft spot for the felines of this world, especially
the less fortunate ones -- she adopted three herself. We
feel being able to give homeless cats a new life is the
best way we can honor Barb's memory and continue doing the
sort of work that she would have supported 100%.
Our no-kill rescue program for cats has begun in a rural
area of Wisconsin where, as in many other similar areas,
so many cats roam the fields, hoping for shelter, food and
a friendly face. Many are born "wild," others are abandoned
by owners who mistakenly feel that the cats, or young kittens,
will "do fine on their own." Each one just needs the chance
to become a real part of a loving family.
Our policy deals with the homeless cat problem on three
fronts:
We provide food and shelter.
We transport the cats to a vet clinic where they
receive any necessary medical attention--to treat all kinds
of injury or illness--and they are then spayed / neutered
and vaccinated.
We work to achieve our ultimate goal -- to find each
cat a good home.
Meanwhile, the cats become a resident part of the Cool
Green World family, receiving loving care and attention.
The fact that our feline residents are spayed/ neutered
means, of course, that they will not be adding to the tragic
problems of pet overpopulation. This is an issue which concerned
Barb Blaine a great deal in her work - and an issue that
we at Cool Green World continue to be concerned with and
strive to help eradicate.
We would like to thank all of the new owners who have opened
their hearts to take a CGW cat into their families. We would
also like to express our sincere appreciation to the staff
of All Creatures Vet Hospital in Appleton, Wisconsin for
all their hard work and their success in locating wonderful
new homes for so many of our rescued cats including Sylvester,
Pretzel, Rickie, Big Cat, Barney, Sean, Scamper, Poupon,
Slate, Felix and three new kittens. Other hopeful cats are
awaiting adoption and we continue to work on gaining the
trust of new homeless feline arrivals to the area.
If you would like to contribute to the care of these rescued
cats, our wish list includes kitty condos, kitty blankets,
scratching posts and name brand cat food. Or you can send
a tax-deductible donation to
