Third Place--La Shanna Hayes, 12th grader from Denby Technical
and Preparatory High School, Detroit, MI (The following are excerpts.)
... We hurt animals without even realizing it. We may never
know the value an animal may have in the web of life. The
earth has more than 1,500,000 species of animals. Many have
been greatly threatened or endangered. When you buy meat
packaged in plastic wrap, have you ever thought about how
the animals were killed to produce it? Shampoo and other
hair care product labels don't mention how the animals were
forced to swallow enough of the chemicals from the products
in order to kill them...
... Have you stopped to think where your fur coat comes
from, or the silk shirt you may have in your closet, or
maybe what the leather jacket you were given for Christmas
is made of? Animals are becoming our name-brand trends in
designer wear. They are the ones that are most expensive
and also the "must haves" on our lists. Conflict revolves
around: "Is it worth another life of an animal?"...
...We, as students, can conserve our wildlife by putting
animals first. We can put our heads together and form a
committee in the attempt to put a stop to unnecessary experiments.
Another way is to have our pets spayed and neutered...
... What about our green, slimy friends (frogs)? Frogs
are the chief species used for dissection. Cut it out!!
Not their hearts, but dissection itself. If the frog population
goes down, the effect will be a hazard to our environment.
Guess who'll be taking over our crops, as well as our environment.
Yes, bugs! If that happens, we will be affected by pesticides,
which means poisoned rivers, streams, and again our wildlife...
...Let's work together to preserve our planet and its wild
creatures. Keep it green, "Cool Green." The world revolves
around you.
