Second Place--Bri Juin Warren, 12th grader from Renaissance
High School, Detroit, MI (The following are excerpts.)
...You may have noticed a lot of unusual animals around
your area lately. Why? Because of encroachment--the intrusion
of the rights of another or, in this case, animals. Human
activities such as corporate farming, recreation, mining
and even pollution cause habitat destruction and species
endangerment...
...Millions and millions of acres are used for agricultural
purposes in the United States. Forests, rangelands, and
wetlands are constantly being destroyed in order to construct
agricultural grounds. Small family farms are being converged
into industry farms, leaving animals homeless and helpless. Fertilizers
and pesticides are being spread throughout these areas,
which not only make situations "uncomfortable" for animals,
but these foreign chemicals also make territories uninhabitable...
...We are constantly killing harmless animals and creatures
just to make our living and lifestyles more comfortable.
In order to save the endangered species of not only our
nation, but our world, we need to find safer ways to carry
out some of our activities or eliminate them. The other
species that share this world with us make this world a
much better place to live.
Now consider this--would you rather have a world with polluted
streams, buildings, and humans as the only dwelling species
or a fresh-aired, green-grassed earth with beautiful creatures
to share it with? I think the choice is obvious! Now, lets
make a change...starting right now, with you.
